California Hosts Oregon in Pac-12 Conference Game

#6 Oregon Ducks vs. California Golden Bears Preview

Start Time: Friday, October 24th 2014 at 10:00pm ET
Location: Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California
Station: Fox Sports 1

The California Golden Bears 4-3 (5-2 ATS) have been better than I expected them to be this season. This will be the toughest test for them this season though, as they play host to the Oregon Ducks 6-1 (3-4 ATS) on Friday night in a Pac-12 match-up.

Oregon has bounced back from their loss to Arizona will wins over UCLA (42-30) and Washington (45-20). California comes into this game on a 2-game losing streak. They were dominated by Washington (31-7) and just lost this past week to the Bruins (36-34).

Oregon vs. California Point Spread

Only the point spread has been released for this game so far and I’m a little surprised that the Ducks are favored by so much. Cal is playing well this season and they have the talent to keep this game close, especially with the Golden Bears playing at home.

Ducks vs. Golden Bears Week 9 Preview

California’s game plan will be simple this week and that’s to allow Jared Goff to do his thing. When Goff plays well Cal typically wins or is close to winning every game. Cal comes into this game averaging 372.1 PYPG (3rd), 124.4 RYPG (108th) and 41.6 PPG (10th).

Goff has already thrown for 24 TD passes compared to just 4 INT’s. Goff isn’t a running threat, as he doesn’t have a single rush on the season, but that’s fine when he’s averaging well over 350+ passing yards per game. He should be in for a big game this week.

Oregon allows 23.7 PPG (48th), 168.9 RYPG (75th) and 279.6 PYPG (107th). Their defense has been poor all season. Washington State played Oregon and almost won due to their passing attack earlier in the season and I expect Cal to have a similar result.

Cal has five players with 20+ receptions this season, which shows how much depth they have on offense. Oregon isn’t going to be able to shutdown Goff and the Cal passing attack will put up points, but the problem is Cal may allow 60+ points to Oregon.

The weakness on Cal has been their defense all season long. They allow 38.4 PPG (120th), 391.7 PYPG (125th) and 133.3 RYPG (38th) this season. If they can stop the Ducks run game that’d be a bonus, but Marcus Mariota will put up big passing numbers.

Mariota has thrown 19 TD passes and 0 INT’s, which is incredible. He’s also second on the team in rushing yards (289) and rushing TD’s (5). Royce Freeman leads the team in carries (114), rushing yards (636) and rushing TD’s (11), but Oregon uses a committee.

The Ducks rank 15th in passing yards (309.7 PYPG), 32nd in rushing yards (217.3 RYPG) and 6th in points scored (43.6 PPG). Oregon has only scored under 40 points twice this season and the Golden Bears won’t hold them to under 40 points this week.

Breakout Players in ORE vs. CAL

Devon Allen has 23 receptions this season, but he’s averaging 19.1 yards per catch and leads the team with 6 receiving TD’s. He’s a big play threat every snap that he’s on the field and against this Cal defense he’s going to have a big TD or two on Friday night.

Daniel Lasco is the leading rusher on Cal and he’s a threat in the pass game as well. Lasco has a TD in his last six games and he has had 2 TD’s in two of his last three games. He needs to step up against Oregon and have a big day for Cal to keep this one close.

Oregon vs. California Picks

I don’t understand why the point spread is so big in this game. Oregon has struggled against the pass all season and they won’t be able to shutdown Goff at Levi’s Stadium. This is a primetime game on Friday night that the nation will be watching.

This will be a shootout, but if a total is released it’s going to be insanely high and I won’t be betting it for that reason. With really high totals one or two drives that end in FG’s can change everything. I’m confident Cal can keep this close and cover ATS though.
