Buffalo Bills vs. Cleveland Browns Week 5 Preview

Start Time: Thursday, October 3rd 2013 at 8:25pm ET
Location: FirstEnergy Stadium
Network: Live on NFL

The Buffalo Bills 2-2 (3-1 ATS) take on the Cleveland Browns 2-2 (2-2 ATS) this week on Thursday Night Football. Cleveland looked as if their season was over after week 2, but the back-ups have been playing great and the Browns have now won two straight games.

If the Browns can keep winning the fans will forget about the loss of Trent Richardson sooner rather than later. Brian Hoyer has been managing the offense well and the Browns defense has stepped it up. Buffalo will have their hands full on the road this week.

Bills vs. Browns Point Spread, Money Line & Over/Under

I didn’t think the Browns would be favorites at all this season, but after winning two games the bookmakers have made the Browns a –4 point favorite at home. The over/under is very low at O/U 41 points, but that’s because of the Browns defense playing so well.

Can Brian Hoyer Leads the Browns to Three Consecutive Wins

Before Brandon Weeden got injured he had a QB rating of 62.0. Brian Hoyer hasn’t looked like a superstar in his two games, but he has completed 59.8% of his passes (55/92) for 590 yards, 5 TD’s and 3 INT’s. He has brought new life to this Browns offense.

Cleveland has only averaged 16 PPG (29th), 76 RYPG (27th) and 247.8 PYPG (14th), but the defense has played great lately. The Browns have had an underrated defense for years now. Cleveland’s defense allows 17.5 PPG (8th), 212.5 PYPG (9th) and 79 RYPG (4th).

The Browns have a turnover margin per game of 0 (14th), which is great considering the team has turned the football over quite a bit to begin the season. The defense has also put pressure on opposing QB’s and they’ve averaged 3.5 sacks per game (3rd).

Buffalo benefited from 5 Flacco INT’s last week to beat the Ravens. The Bills defense hasn’t been able to stop opposing offenses, as they’ve allowed 23.2 PPG (18th), 277 PYPG (22nd) and 122.2 RYPG (27th), but they have a TO margin per game of 1.0 (7th).

The good news is the Bills should be able to focus on Hoyer in this match-up, as the Browns still don’t have a running game. Willis McGahee is getting most of the carries for the Browns now, but he has only averaged 2.4 yards per rushing attempt (23 Carries).

Offensively the Bills have relied heavily on their rushing attack (152 RYPG – 2nd). EJ Manuel hasn’t made too many mistakes, as he only has 3 INT’s compared to 5 TD’s, but the Bills only average 198 yards through the air (28th) through four weeks.

Biggest Positional Battles in Buffalo vs. Cleveland

The Browns have been stout against the run this season and their front seven has to shutdown the Bills run game. Spiller (66 Carries for 230 yards & 0 TD’s) and Jackson (48 Carries for 256 yards & 2 TD’s) have been the best running back duo in the league this year.

Hoyer has a legitimate shot to win this game for the Browns at home on TNF. The Bills secondary has been fortunate to intercept the football regularly to start the season, but you know they’ll regress to the mean in the turnover battle and that isn’t good news.

Teams have shredded the secondary and if it weren’t for interceptions the Bills could potentially be 0-4 right now. The Browns have been smart not to make too many mistakes and if they can continue playing smart football they’ll roll past the Bills this week.

Bills vs. Browns Week 5 Picks

This spread opened at –3 and early action moved the point spread up to –4.5 points. You could wait to see if the spread drops back down to –3, but I don’t expect that to happen. I’d lock in the –4 right now or if you’re worried simply buy a full point off the spread.

The action is split on this game and I wish the Browns didn’t win their L2 games, as they wouldn’t be favored in this spot and I could bet them as underdogs. However, even at –4 I think the Browns defense will shutdown the Bills offense and Cleveland will cover.
