Bet on the Patriots to Beat the Broncos in NFL Week 9

Denver Broncos vs. New England Patriots Preview

Start Time: Sunday, November 2nd 2014 at 4:25pm ET
Location: Gillette Stadium in Foxborough
Station: Watch on CBS

The New England Patriots 6-2 (4-4 ATS) host the Denver Broncos 6-1 (4-3 ATS) in what could be a preview of the AFC Championship match-up in the playoffs this year. It’s hard to believe how well the Patriots have turned their season around the last few weeks.

Since losing to the Chiefs badly in week 4 the Patriots have gone 4-0 and they’ve averaged 39.5 PPG during that win streak. Since losing to the Seahawks in week 3 the Broncos are 4-0 and the offense has put up an average of 37.3 PPG during that span.

Early action on this game has been split and right now slightly more action has come in on the Patriots to cover. That’ll change as the week progresses once more of the public starts betting Denver. Almost all of the action is on the over for obvious reasons.

DEN @ NE Stats Pack & Injuries

Montee Ball is expected to be back this week, but Ronnie Hillman will remain RB1 in the rotation. The Patriots are dealing with more than a handful of injuries. Ridley and Mayo are out for the season and Chandler Jones will miss about two months of action.

Patriots vs. Broncos Preview

The Patriots have done well against the Broncos in recent years. New England is 4-1 against Denver since 2011, which includes three home wins. Denver beat the Pats in last year’s playoffs at Mile High, but other than that Belichick has had the Broncos number.

Peyton Manning is averaging 297.0 PYPG (3rd) and the run game has slowly been improving (101.4 RYPG – 21st). Hillman just had his second game with over 100 rushing yards. Hillman is averaging 4.7 YPC whereas Ball averaged 3.1 YPC before his injury.

New England allows 129.6 RYPG (25th), so the Broncos will look to Hillman often. If Ball can come back this week he’ll be a change of pace RB in the 2H. The big signings in the secondary for NE have started to pay off, as the Pats only allow 210.9 PYPG (2nd).

This will be a good test for the Patriots secondary, as the Broncos have a ton of weapons in the pass game. Demariyus Thomas and Emmanuel Saunders both have 47 receptions. They also have Julius Thomas who has 30 catches, nine of which have been for a TD.

The Pats offense doesn’t have much of a run game since losing Ridley. They’re averaging 105.6 RYPG (17th), but Tom Brady has been able to step up and NE is now averaging 257.5 PYPG (10th). Brady has thrown for 350+ yards in two of his last three games.

Denver isn’t going to give up many yards on the ground (72.4 RYPG – 1st), but the defense gives up 242.9 PYPG (17th). Brady will have to continue finding Rob Gronkowski, Julian Edelman and Brandon LaFell. All three players have 30+ receptions this season.

I feel that this match-up sets up well for the Patriots. They have the secondary to limit Manning from scoring 40+ points and I’m not sure that the Broncos will be able to shutdown Brady at Foxborough, especially with the way that Gronks is playing lately.

Broncos vs. Patriots Picks

This will be a close game and I give the edge to the Patriots at home. Belichick has this team playing great right now and the Broncos will struggle to contain Brady. Manning will put up good numbers, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he threw an interception or two.

New England has owned this series and they also have a bye coming up next week. Belichick will have his team ready and he’ll put everything on the line to get a win over Denver before heading into their bye. At +3.5 points I really like the Patriots to cover ATS.
