Bet on the Panthers to Cover ATS Over the Steelers

When: Sunday, September 21st 2014 at 8:30pm ET
Where: Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina
Watch: NBC

The Carolina Panthers 2-0 (2-0 ATS) have started where they left off last season. They’re leading the NFC South and the defense has been excellent. Carolina hosts the Pittsburgh Steelers 1-1 (0-2 ATS) who were just beat up on the road by the Ravens (26-6).

Latest Point Spread & Over/Under Lines

We haven’t seen much movement on this point spread this week. Carolina went up a ½ point to –3.5 (-110) earlier in the week, but it has settled back to a FG. The game total has moved up a full point from the opening line of 41 points.

PIT @ CAR Stats at a Glance

Neither team is explosive on offense, but the Steelers have a small edge. Carolina has a huge edge on defense though and that’s why I’m betting on them to cover the point spread at home. Pittsburgh will have trouble scoring in the double digits on Sunday night.

Panthers vs. Steelers Week 3 Preview

Cam Newton missed the opening week, but he looked good against the Lions. Newton completed 22 of 34 passes for 281 yards and 1 TD. Kelvin Benjamin and Greg Olsen have been playing great, but this offense is lacking a superstar at WR/RB.

Carolina’s bruising run game has been poor (87.5 RYPG – 25th) and the pass attack is average (236.0 PYPG – 15th). DeAngelo Williams is expected to suit up, which should mean that the Panthers will have success against the Steelers rush defense (174.0 RYPG – 30th).

The run game will have to be productive, as the Steelers secondary has done well (182.0 PYPG – 7th). The reason I love the Panthers is because of their defense. They’ve only allowed an average of 207.5 PYPG (12th) and 86.0 RYPG (6th) through two games.

Ben Roethlisberger has thrown for 582 passing yards, but he only has 1 TD and 2 INT’s. Le’Veon Bell has performed well up to this point, but the Steelers are only picking up 113.0 RYPG (19th). Bell and LaGarette Blount both have 1 TD on the ground.

These two teams don’t play each other often, so there is no point looking at the H2H trends. I can see this game playing out similar to Carolina’s game last week against the Lions. Carolina was able to completely shutdown the Lions offense.

Detroit has a good offense that I rank higher than the Steelers offense, so I don’t see the Panthers having a problem shutting down Roethlisberger. The past month I’ve heard a lot about the Panthers having a weak secondary, but they haven’t played poorly.

Pittsburgh was only able to put up 6 points on the road against the Ravens and the Panthers are much better defensively. Bell is the most explosive player on the Pittsburgh offense, but the Panthers will keep the holes plugged and limit Bell’s quickness.

Carolina will be able to run the football and keep the chains moving. The Panthers never blow out teams on the scoreboard, but they tend to do well ATS at home. After Carolina the first two weeks I’m confident they’ll handle business against Pittsburgh.

Steelers vs. Panthers Predictions

This is the Sunday night game this week and will be on primetime. Newton and the Panthers defense will be able to silence any of the remaining critics. Pittsburgh isn’t strong on the road and this offense won’t match-up well against Carolina.

Carolina comes into this game on a 7-1-1 ATS run in their last nine home games. I also leaned to the under, but with the total being so low I passed on betting the total. I really don’t expect more than 34-37 points to be scored between both teams.

At the end of the day, Carolina is the better team, they’re at home and they’re only favored by a FG. I’m not going to over think this one and I’ll back the Panthers until they prove I shouldn’t, but to start the year they’ve looked great.
