Bengals Host Steelers in Week 14 AFC North Rivalry

Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Cincinnati Bengals Preview

When: Sunday, December 7th 2014 at 1:00pm ET
Location: Paul Brown Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio
Watch: Live on CBS

The Cincinnati Bengals 8-3-1 (6-5-1 ATS) hosts the Pittsburgh Steelers 7-5 (5-7 ATS) at Paul Brown Stadium. Cincy has won three in a row and have a lead in the AFC North, but it’s close. This is a huge match-up at this point in the year between bitter rivals.

At this point spread the bookies are basically saying these two teams are even and Cincy is –3 due to home field advantage. The total is tight and I doubt it’ll move much this week. I’ll be sticking with the point spread rather than betting on the over/under.

PIT @ CIN Stats Pack

This should be a very close match-up between two teams that know each other very well. The Steelers offense is better, but they have had some inconsistency problems this season. Cincy has the better defense, especially when they’re playing at home.

Steelers vs. Bengals Point Spread Analysis

Cincinnati is 4-1-1 at home this season, which isn’t quite as dominant as normal, but still excellent. Pittsburgh is 3-3 on the road and they come into this game after losing to the Saints (35-32) in a game where Roethlisberger threw for over 400+ passing yards.

The Steelers have one of the best offenses in the NFL, as they average 299.2 PYPG (4th) and 118.1 RYPG (11th). Big Ben has already thrown for 3705 passing yards, 26 TD’s and just 8 INT’s. He’s having a career year thanks in large part to Antonio Brown.

Brown leads the team with 96 receptions for 1258 yards and 11 TD’s. The youngsters on the team have emerged as well this year including Markus Wheaton and Martavis Bryant. Both of the young WR’s have come up big when needed so far this season.

The Bengals defense has been relatively poor this season as well. They don’t allow too many points, but the defense has allowed 238.9 PYPG (14th) and 125.1 RYPG (25th). Le’Veon Bell should have a big game against the Bengals questionable run defense.

Bell only has 3 rushing TD’s, but he’s already rushed for over 1000 yards and he’s a threat in the pass game. Cincinnati’s offense is averaging 219.1 PYPG (24th) and 124.5 RYPG (9th), but I expect them to struggle to move the football against the Steelers.

Pittsburgh’s defense hasn’t been great this season against the pass (242.3 PYPG – 16th), but they’ve done much better at stopping the run (105.6 RYPG – 11th). If the Steelers can force Andy Dalton into beating them they’ll likely come out of Cincy with a victory.

Dalton has been struggling through the air despite having all of his weapons back in the line-up at WR. Unless the Bengals are able to pick it up in the pass game I don’t think they’re going to win the AFC North, as the defense won’t be able to hold up all season.

Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Cincinnati Bengals Picks

Since 2010 the Steelers are 6-2 SU against the Bengals although Cincy has won two of the last three. In the two games that Cincy won they held the Steelers to just 10 points in both games, but that’s not going to happen with the way Roethlisberger is playing.

I’m tempted to bet the money line in this game as well, but I’ll wait until Sunday before I decide on that. I haven’t been impressed with the Bengals offense this year. They’ve dealt with injuries, but Dalton isn’t playing that well either in my opinion.

It’s only a matter of time before the Bengals start allowing more points as well because the defense is giving up a lot of yards. This is a huge game for both teams, but the Bengals can afford to lose this week whereas the Steelers can’t really afford to lose.
