The two top seeds in the West region made it through the madness of the first few rounds. Now the #2 Arizona Wildcats and #1 Wisconsin Badgers will play each other in the Elite Eight for the 2nd year in a row.

Arizona started slow against Xavier, but they ended up winning by eight points (68-60) last night. Wisconsin were down most of the game against North Carolina, but they managed to pull away late and ended up covering with a 7-point win (79-72).

These two teams played each other in the Elite Eight last year during March Madness too. Wisconsin won 64-63 in overtime. It was an exciting game and these two teams now know each other well. This is going to be a game that comes down to the wire.

Wildcats vs. Badgers betting odds

The early action has been coming in on Arizona to win and cover the small point spread. Nearly 80% of bets have been on the under in the game total market. I’m surprised to see the Wildcats open up as favorites, but I’ll gladly bet on the Badgers money line.

Starting line-up

Wisconsin Badgers:

Arizona Wildcats:

Three reasons why Wisconsin will beat Arizona

Wisconsin are the most efficient team in the country and they never beat themselves. The Badgers rank 1st in turnovers (7.4 TOPG) and 21st in FG% (48.0%). Arizona have the size to beat Wisconsin, but they often get into foul trouble and they lack depth.

Kaminsky averaged 18.4 PPG and 8.1 RPG this season and he’s averaging 20.7 PPG and 9.0 RPG in the tourney. T.J McConnell has been great for Arizona and he’s averaging 16.0 PPG in the tournament – well above his season average of 10.3 PPG.

In March Madness the team that can knock down the most 3-pointers are in great shape. Neither the Badgers or Wildcats shoot the 3-ball that well, but the Badgers throw up many more 3-pointers and that’s how they pull away from their opponents late.

Breaking down the match-up

These two teams are very similar. The Badgers ranked 2nd in RPI and played the 16th toughest SOS, while Arizona ranked 6th in RPI and played the 38th toughest SOS. Wisconsin definitely played the tougher competition, but these teams are close.

Wisconsin averages 71.9 PPG on offense (67th), 33.7 RPG (204th), 12.7 APG (165th), 3.5 BPG (164th), 4.5 SPG (332nd) and they give up 57.2 PPG (10th). Wisconsin don’t fill the stat sheet, but they score points, play defense and they’re extremely efficient.

Arizona rank even better than the Badgers in most categories, but they played an easier schedule. Arizona averages 76.4 PPG (22nd), 37.2 RPG (45th), 14.2 APG (67th), 3.6 BPG (153rd), 7.2 SPG (69th) and they allow 59.0 PPG (14th) on defense.

Both teams have lots of star power, but I trust the Badgers to execute more after watching them against UNC. They were down fairly big at a few points in the 2nd half against the Tar Heels, but they never panicked and they comfortably won the game.

Sam Dekker is fresh off a double-double against UNC, as he finished the game with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Nigel Hayes had a poor shooting performance, but he’s the type of player that’ll be able to bounce back quickly.

Rondae Hollis-Jefferson cooled down against Xavier, as he went 1 of 4 from the field for 5 points. Kaleb Tarczewski finished the game with a double-double (12 points and 12 rebounds) – his first of the tournament. However, Wisconsin have the size to defend him.

Arizona Wildcats vs. Wisconsin Badgers ML predictions

Arizona is a tough team to play against. They use their size to cause match-up issues all over the court. They only start one guard and he’s the best player on the team. However, the Badgers have a lot of size too, plus the Wisconsin big men stretch the court better.

It looks like we’re going to get the Wisconsin vs. Kentucky match-up that we’ve all been waiting for. After watching Kentucky crush the Mountaineers – I’m not sure anyone can beat them. Just like the UNC game – Wisconsin will pull away late and win.
