Arizona Wildcats vs. Ohio State Buckeyes – Sweet 16

When: 7:45pm ET. Thursday, March 28th 2013
Where: Staples Center in Los Angeles, California

In what should be one of the best 2013 Sweet 16 match-ups, the #2 Ohio State Buckeyes 28-7 (13-5 Big Ten) will play the #6 Arizona Wildcats 27-7 (12-6 Pac-12) – with the winner moving forward to an E8 showdown between La Salle or Wichita State. Below are the latest betting odds for this matchup, along with my favorite bets for the game.

Latest Arizona vs. Ohio State Betting Odds

Ohio State opened as -4 (-110) favorites at most online sportsbooks, and they’re -3.5 right now. If you like them at -4, get them at -105 at Bovada. The over/under opened at 135, and it’s up to 135.5 at most books right now.

How the Wildcats & Buckeyes Made it to the S16

Arizona is a very good team for a #6 seed, but I feel that they haven’t been tested that much yet. The Wildcats jumped out on to a big lead against #11 Belmont and won 81-64 in R2. In the 3rd round the Wildcats had an easy time defeating #14 Harvard 74-51.

The Buckeyes cruised past #15 Iona in the 2nd round by a score of 95-70. In the Buckeyes 3rd round game against #10 Iowa State it was a lot closer down the stretch. OSU blew a double digit lead in the 2H, but they won on a last second 3-pointer from Craft.

Ohio State vs. Arizona Betting Preview

On paper these teams match-up extremely well against each other and this game should be a dog fight. Arizona had the #11 RPI compared to Ohio State who had the #13 RPI this year, but OSU had a SOS rank of #11 while Arizona had a SOS rank of #25.

Arizona only had to play 3 T25 opponents this year and they went 2-1 with a 1-1 record against UCLA and a win over Florida. OSU I feel has been more battle tested in the Big Ten. OSU has played 12 T25 opponents this season and they’re just 5-7 SU.

Ohio State had a rough start to the season, but they’ve won their L10 games including wins over Michigan State (2x), Wisconsin and Indiana. The Buckeyes are a team that will grind out wins and rarely came away with a lopsided victory.

Looking at the stats Arizona looks great on paper. Arizona outscores Ohio State (73.5 PPG vs. 70.3 PPG) and they out rebound the Buckeyes (36.6 RPG vs. 35.3 RPG). The rest of the stats are tight, but the Buckeyes played a tougher SOS this season.

These two teams are very efficient, so each possession will be that much more important. The Wildcats ranked #24 in offensive efficiency (1.070) and #46 in defensive efficiency (0.922) while the Buckeyes ranked #25 in OE (1.070) and #20 in DE (0.895).

Biggest Player Match-Up in Arizona vs. OSU

Aaron Craft is the most important player on the Buckeyes due to his defense and ability to take a game over. Craft only scored 4 points against Iona, but he pitched in with 7 assists and 6 steals. Against ISU Craft was 2nd on the team with 18 points.

Craft doesn’t shoot the 3-pointer well, but he knocked his only attempt down against ISU to win the game with 0.5 seconds left. He’s great at taking the basketball to the hoop though and he typically is nearly automatic from the free throw line.

Arizona comes into this game with a great guard as well in Mark Lyons who has 50 points in two games (27 & 23). Lyons is a pure scorer on the Wildcats and I think that with Craft on him he’s not going to have nearly as much success as he has had thus far.

Arizona vs. Ohio State Predictions

I’m most confident in the Buckeyes covering the -3.5 point spread against Arizona in this game. Craft and Lyons will be a great match-up, but I don’t think Arizona will match-up well against the other Buckeyes star in Deshaun Thomas who leads OSU with 19.5 PPG.

Iowa State was a tough team for the Buckeyes that was very resilient. OSU had to dig deep to beat ISU and I think that will help them the rest of the tournament in close games. Arizona will hang close, but falter down the stretch due to Ohio State’s depth.

I also have a bet in the Arizona vs. Ohio State over/under market. Both teams are very efficient on defense, but I like the O134 in this game due to the fact there are going to be so many scorers on the court who can light it up at anytime.

Ohio State has scored 90 and 78 points respectively in their two games and that offensive power won’t slowdown. This game is going to have some pace and if it remains close like I expect it will most of the way then it should go over 140+ points.
