2019 PGA Championship WinnerFor the first time since 1949, the PGA Championship will be played in May. The PGA major is typically played in August. There will be another first in the PGA Championship this week, as this will be the first major to feature the top 100 in the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR).

This year’s tournament will be played on the Black Course at Bethpage State Park. The course is a long 7,459 yard, par 70. It’s regarded as one of the toughest courses in the United States.

To win here, golfers need to be long off the tee while remaining accurate, as hitting fairways is vital, as you don’t want to be sitting in the rough on your second shot. The greens aren’t overly difficult, but there’s a premium on hitting greens in regulation, which will require great iron play.

Betting on the PGA Championship Winner 2019

How can you fade Koepka? Sure, he’s only paying 11/1 odds, but the best often succeed in this major, with six of the last seven winners paying 45/1 or less. Koepka plays his best when the stakes are high and he has been the best golfer in recent majors. In fact, the American is the defending champion and he has finished T6 or better in six of his last nine PGA major appearances.

Koepka ranks 14th in driving distance (308.1 Avg.) and 14th in greens in regulation percentage (GIR%) with 71.08%. He finished T2 in this year’s Masters and just finished T4 in the AT&T Byron Nelson this past week. Koepka is in play to win, finish top 5 (+225 Odds) or finish top 10 (+110 Odds).

You can also bet on Koepka to finish as the top American at +650 odds with Bovada.

I’m high on the Italian this week. Molinari is putting together a solid 2019. He won the Arnold Palmer Invitational in March and finished T5 in the Masters last month. Molinari has finished T6 or better in four of the last six major tournaments – his worst finish was T25 in last year’s US Open.

Molinari may struggle off the tees a bit, as he averages 289.9 yards per drive (T132) and ranks T51 in driving accuracy (65.76%). However, he ranks T5 in overall putting (1.556 average putts per hole). If he can find the greens with consistency he has a chance to take this down. Molinari has had success in this tournament with finishes of T2 (2017) and T6 (2018) the past two years.

I expect Molinari (+800) and Justin Rose (+650) to battle it out for the top European player this week, as I think Rory McIlroy (+350 to be top European) will struggle for the third consecutive major.

Best Value Bet to Finish Top 10 at the PGA Championship 2019

I’ll allow you to get creative with long shots if you wish this week, but my best bet to finish T10 with a reasonable payout is Tony Finau. Finau is priced 12th in the winners market (33/1) and I will have to have some action on him to win as well, but I fully expect him to battle for a T10 finish.

Finau steps up his play during the majors and he has finished T10 or better in four of the last five major tournaments. Finau ranks T6 in driving distance (311.2 Avg.) and T37 in overall putting with a 1.582 average. Finau fits the profile of a golfer that can excel at Bethpage Black Course.

Betting on Tiger Woods at the PGA Championship 2019

Tiger Woods won the Masters last month – his 15th major win in his career. He’s now just three major titles behind Jack Nicklaus and Woods has stated he wants to chase the record. Woods is one of the co-favorites at 11/1 odds and I’m not going to be betting on him to win.

I’ll look to target Woods in match-up bets each round, though, as Woods has the style of game to do well on this course. Woods isn’t as strong off the tees as he once was (299.6 Avg. – T52), but he ranks 1st in GIR% (75.56%). If he’s on his game he’ll compete, but he won’t win back-to-back majors.

Two other golfers to keep an eye on in the match-up markets are Justin Rose and Xander Schauffele – both of whom could end up winning the entire thing if everything were to fall into place.
