We’re back with another NFL futures bet feature. This time we’re going to discuss which QB will lead the 2019 NFL regular season in passing yards – a popular betting market at Bovada.

QBs are the most talked about players in the NFL. With the league remaining pass-happy, QBs are throwing for more yards than ever before and that’s not going to change in 2019.

There has only been eleven times in NFL history where a QB has thrown for 5000+ yards and ten of those have come since 2011. Drew Brees leads the NFL in 5000+ passing yard seasons at five.

The only QB to throw for 5000+ yards prior to 2011 was Dan Marino (1984). The all-time regular season record for the most passing yards is owned by Peyton Manning (2013) with 5477 yards.

2018 NFL Passing Yards Leaders

The majority of the QB discussion last season revolved around MVP Patrick Mahomes. He lit up the NFL in his second season with 5097 passing yards, but that was only good for second place.

Despite flying under the radar a bit last season, likely because of all the turmoil surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers, Ben Roethlisberger led the NFL in regular season passing yards (5129).

Only five QBs exceeded 4500+ passing yards last season and those are as follows:

Top Contenders to Throw the Most Regular Season Passing Yards in 2019

Mahomes, Ryan, Luck, Roethlisberger and Aaron Rodgers are all priced at 8/1 or lower to lead the NFL in regular season passing yards this year. Mahomes is market leader (+450 odds).

You can bet on this NFL futures betting market at the Bovada Sportsbook ($250 Bonus).

Patrick Mahomes Chiefs 2019

Mahomes threw for 300+ passing yards in eight regular season games in 2018. Defenses started to figure him out, though, as he threw for 300+ yards only once in the Chiefs last five games.

I expect defenses to have studied Mahomes a lot and his passing yards total will decrease. He may be without his leading WR Tyreek Hill for the beginning of the season if Hill is suspended.

Ryan ranked third in passing attempts (608) last season, trailing Roethlisberger (675) and Luck (639). He’s going to throw for volume again, especially with RB Tevin Coleman gone.

Lead RB Devonta Freeman is an injury risk and if he goes down, Ryan would air it out even more. He is throwing to one of the top WR units as well with Julio Jones, Mohamed Sanu and Calvin Ridley.

This could be the first season Ryan throws for 5000+ passing yards in his career and he’s my pick.

I’m not confident in the Steelers offense this season. Antonio Brown is a headcase, but he is one of the best WRs in the league and Big Ben will miss him. I would avoid Roethlisberger at all costs.

JuJu Smith-Schuster will start seeing double teams, as Pittsburgh now lacks WR depth.

Luck manages to be among throwing leaders despite the Colts lack of WR talent. T.Y. Hilton is a WR1, but the Colts have struggled to surround him with other WRs that’ll draw the defense’s attention.

The Colts lost WRs Dontrelle Inman and Ryan Grant, but replaced them with Devin Funchess and rookie Parris Campbell (Pick #59). The youngster is expected to help stretch the field.

Aaron Rodgers Packers 2019

Rodgers is another QB who would throw for so many more yards if he had better WRs. GB come into this season with Davante Adams and then a bunch of question marks.

Can Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Geronimo Allison or Equanimeous St. Brown take the next step and become a legitimate WR2? The Packers coaches have said they want to run more this season too.

Rodgers makes magical throws regularly, but he’ll struggle to throw for huge volume.

Underdogs to Bet On to Lead the NFL in Passing Yards This Season

There isn’t much value betting on underdogs in this futures market, as the same QBs often throw for the most passing yards every season. However, here are two QBs to consider in 2019.

As mentioned earlier, Brees has thrown for 5000+ yards in five separate seasons, more than any QB in history. However, last season he had a down year, throwing for 3992 yards (13th).

With RB Mark Ingram gone, I’m curious if Brees is utilized more in the regular season. Alvin Kamara is a threat to break-off big chunks through the air and the Saints are deep at WR.

Ted Ginn is a speedy deep-threat and Michael Thomas is one of the best WRs in the league.

Mayfield threw for 3725 yards in his rookie season with Cleveland in 14 games. If he can play a full 16-game season, he should not only exceed last year’s total, but could lead the NFL.

The Browns are being hyped up too heavily, but this offense should perform. The top three WRs on the team now are Odell Beckham Jr., Jarvis Landry and Antonio Callaway.

There’s also TE David Njoku, RB Nick Chubb and RB Kareem Hunt. With Mayfield’s mobility in the pocket and a ton of talented targets, the sky’s the limit for Mayfield in 2019.
