2017 CFP National Championship Futures Betting Guide

2017 College Football National ChampionshipSeason Start Date: Friday, August 26th 2016

We’re about a month from the start of the 2016-17 college football season. Bettors have been wagering on National Championship futures since January, but the markets are heating up.

Alabama are favorites to win the National Championship at 6/1 odds, but Ohio State (8/1), Clemson (8/1) and Michigan (9/1) are all close behind in the market and should contend for a playoff spot.

Top Contenders to Win the 2017 College Football National Championship

Winners of last season’s National Championship and three of the last five, Alabama are expected to contend for the title again this season. Replacing the team’s QB and the two leading RBs from last season won’t be easy, but Nick Saban has recruited incredible depth and the offense will be fine.

The defense will be transitioning to a new coordinator and a lot of the team’s depth is in the NFL, but like the offense, plenty of talent returns. Road games against Tennessee and LSU will be the toughest obstacles for the Crimson Tide to navigate, but there’s a great chance Alabama will make the playoffs.

Out of the top contenders, I expect the Buckeyes to struggle the most. The team returns just six starters, including Ezekiel Elliot and Braxton Miller. J.T. Barrett will need a monster season, but he’ll have mostly unproven talent on offense. Urban Meyer has reloaded, but a lot of the stars are gone.

An early road game against the Sooners could derail the season before October. The Buckeyes also have to play Michigan and MSU in their final two regular season games. OSU are inexperienced and have a brutal schedule to deal with, regardless of Meyer’s magic, OSU are contenders to disappoint.

Clemson set a school record with 14 wins last season, but they lost to Bama in the title game. Eight starters on offense return, including QB Deshaun Watson who is a Heisman candidate. The offense scored 38.5 PPG last season and they could be even better this season, as the unit is more experienced.

The schedule isn’t bad and the toughest game will be a road game against FSU. Clemson will have pressure to meet high expectations, but they’re loaded with talent. The defense lost a lot of players to the NFL, but they had to retool last season and they still managed to finish with a top 10 defense.

Jim Harbaugh has turned the Wolverines around quickly, but are they title contenders? Jake Ruddock is now gone and Michigan will need to rely on another QB. Thankfully for Wolverines fans, the receiving corps is among the best in the nation and the offensive line is experienced.

I expect OSU to have a down season by their standards and Michigan could take advantage of that and win the Big Ten. This team will live by their defense again. A new coordinator is in Ann Arbor, but he has a ton of talent to work with and the Wolverines should have another top 10 defense.

My prediction to win the CFB National Championship 2017

LSU are often among the top contenders to win the National Championship every year, but they have been rather disappointing in recent years. Leonard Fournette is the best RB in college football and will lead this offense again, but QB Brandon Harris has to make noticeable strides forward in the pass game.

The Tigers return nine players on offense and defense, which is great news. The team is experienced and the defensive unit will excel using the 3-4 scheme brought in by Dave Aranda. Bama has proven you don’t need elite QB play in the SEC. Is this the year the Tigers make the title game?

Les Miles and the Tigers haven’t made the title game since 2011 – where they lost to Bama (21-0). The SEC is always tough, but the Tigers are going to be better than last year. They get Bama at home this season in November, but they also have tough road games against Auburn and Florida.
