2016 NASCAR Sprint Cup Championship Odds and Predictions

2016 NASCAR Sprint Cup LogoTHE big news this summer has been around the retirement of Jeff Gordon and the news that Tony Stewart will retire at the end of this season. Chase Elliot will takeover the #24 car. Jeffery Earnhardt and Ryan Blaney are among the favorites to win ROTY. Out of the two, I expect Blaney to have the better year.

Harvick is the favorite, which makes sense, as he’ll draw a lot of public action. He has finished in the top three on the Sprint Cup standings the last three years and he won the championship in 2014. Harvick has also won twelve races in the last three years, including three wins in 2015. Can he remain consistent in 2016?

Is this going to be Logano’s year? Logano ended up sixth in Sprint Cup standings, but he won more races than any other driver (7), including three in a row to start the Chase. He had the fastest car in 2015 and he learned some expensive lessons. With added experience and a great car, Logano is a big threat.

Kenseth won five Sprint Cup Series races in 2015, but he started to fade after September. He had 13 finishes in the top 5, which is impressive. If he can race better once the Chase begins, he’d be a contender, but I’m not convinced he will. He has Sprint Cup standings finishes of 2nd (2013), 7th (2014) and 15th (2015).

When isn’t Johnson a top contender to win the championship? Johnson won five races, but he won’t be happy finishing 10th in the standings. In the first eleven Sprint Cup races in 2015, Johnson had six top 3 finishes (Three wins), including a run of five consecutive top 3s. If he can find that form again, he’ll be among the leaders.

Busch will look to repeat as Sprint Cup Champion. He missed eleven races at the beginning of 2015, but when he came back, he was driving exceptionally well. Busch won five races last year, including a run of three in a row during July. He finished in the top 5 in six of the last eight races, including the final four races of the year.

NASCAR Sprint Cup Championship futures picks

The last time a driver repeated as champion was when Johnson won five years in a row (2006-10). Since then, the winners include Stewart (2011), Brad Keselowski (2012), Johnson (2013), Harvick (2014) and Busch (2015). It’s tough predicting this market, as anyone that makes the Chase can win, but you can’t go wrong with Busch.

Busch did great during the Chase races and there’s no reason he won’t again. He’ll definitely make the Chase and we’re not going to get a better price on him. I also like Johnson and may end up betting him later on. He wants to win one more championship and after struggling in last year’s Chase, look for him to finish stronger.

Drivers to watch in 2016

Chase Elliot (+4000): Elliot just won pole position for the Daytona 500 this weekend. That doesn’t mean much in the grand scheme of things, but it’s something to get excited about. NASCAR needs young drivers to succeed soon, as many of the aging veterans are nearing retirement in the next several years.

Austin Dillon (+10000): Dillon needs to start racing better and seeing better results if he expects to remain in the Sprint Cup. He had five top 10 finishes last year in the Sprint Cup, but only one finish in the top 5. This is a big year for Dillon and I expect him to finally get a win in his third full season.

Kyle Larson (+3300): Larson had seventeen top 10 finishes in 2014 and looked ready to breakout in 2015, but he struggled most of the season. He has to find his form again in 2016. He has yet to win a Sprint Cup race, but this is the year he’ll crack that nut. Larson has multiple top 3 finishes, so he has been close to winning in the past.
