Major League Soccer will crown a first-time champion Saturday night when Toronto FC host the Seattle Sounders at BMO Field north of the border in Canada.

Toronto FC claimed home-field advantage by virtue of having five more points than the Sounders, and with a kickoff temperature expected to be in the mid-20s Fahrenheit, it could wind up being pivotal in ending their 10th season in franchise history as league champions. The Reds are making their first MLS Cup appearance in club history after a dramatic two-legged victory over archrivals Montreal, overturning a 3-2 first-leg deficit with a wild 5-2 win after extra time Nov. 30 to advance on a 7-5 aggregate.

Substitute Benoit Cheyreu scored the go-ahead goal in the 98th minute, and Tosaint Ricketts added an insurance marker two minutes later for Toronto FC, who have won their last four matches at BMO Field by a combined 12-5 scoreline. They are led by Italy international Sebastian Giovinco, who had 21 goals and 19 assists in 33 matches, and American striker Jozy Altidore, who chipped in 15 goals in 28 contests.

Altidore has been in exquisite form, scoring a goal in all five of Toronto’s postseason matches while adding four assists. Giovinco has four goals and four assists, including a hat trick in a second-leg victory over New York City FC in the Eastern Conference semifinals, and has rung up a staggering 43 goals and 35 assists in 67 matches in his two seasons in Canada.

The Sounders are also making their first MLS Cup appearance, reaching the title game in their eighth season. Seattle relied on their defense in the Western Conference finals, advancing past Colorado on a 3-1 aggregate after a 1-0 road victory in the second leg Nov. 27

Seattle’s fortunes changed in July with two key moves, the first acquiring Uruguay international Nicolas Lodeiro and replacing coach Sigi Schmid with assistant Brian Schmetzer on July 26. Both made their Sounders debuts July 31, and the team hasn’t looked back since, going 12-4-3 while outscoring opponents 32-19.

They’ve also overcome losing top striker Clint Dempsey to injury thanks to both Lodeiro and rookie forward Jordan Morris, who has seven match-winners among his 14 goals. Lodeiro, a member of Uruguay’s Copa America title-winning side in 2011, has bagged eight goals and eight assists in 18 matches since coming from Argentine side Boca Juniors.

Toronto FC and Seattle Sounders will hit the OVER easily

Toronto FC v Seattle Sounders PreviewThe proficiency of both offenses makes betting over 2.5 goals at -120 odds at Bovada or -118 (1.85) odds at Bet365 a no-brainer. Giovinco is an absolute terror with his pace and on-ball skills, and Altidore provides the perfect foil to the speedy Italian with his physical hold-up skills in the final third. Additionally, both Altidore and compatriot Michael Bradley did not play in the only match between the teams, a 1-1 draw at Toronto on July 2 due to Copa America commitments.

On Seattle’s side, things were also quite different in that match as Lodeiro had yet to sign with the Sounders, who were playing a 4-3-3 under Schmid. Schwartzer has since modified that look to a 4-5-1 with Nelson Valdez up top, though Morris’ deceptive pace allows him to play underneath similar to how Giovinco does for Toronto. Lodeiro’s vision, though, makes him the string-puller of Seattle’s offense, and he will need to evade Bradley to find gaps in Toronto’s midfield to penetrate.

Here’s why I’m betting on Toronto FC to win the 2016 MLS Cup

While there should be goals, plural, the recommendation is to take the home Reds of Toronto FC at -210 at the Bovada Sportsbook or -105 (1.95) at Bet365 in the 1×2 market. While the Sounders have the potential to neutralize Altidore with their central defense pairing of Roman Torres and Chad Marshall, the American forward and Giovinco are just too irrepressible to keep down for a full 90 minutes given both players’ exquisite form heading into this match. Look for Toronto FC to be the first team to lift the MLS Cup trophy north of the border, and a late insurance goal to provide a 3-1 scoreline could provide huge payouts at +1300 at Bovada and 14/1 at Bet365. That two-goal margin would also return +425 at Bovada and 9/2 odds at Bet365.
