NO one outside of the United States were giving Team USA any respect heading into Copa America, but the resilient hosts have managed to earn a berth in the semifinals against Argentina. This is the first time since 1995 that the Americans have advanced to the semifinals – they’ve never finished better than fourth place.

USA v Argentina betting markets for semifinals

Americans can bet on this match at Bovada.lv and new bettors will receive a match bonus of 50% for up to $250 on first deposits. Live outside of the USA? Bet365 will have hundreds of markets on the match and they offer new punters a 100% bonus for up to $200.

How did they get here?

USA opened the tournament with a 2-0 loss to Colombia, but they bounced quickly in group play with wins against Costa Rica (4-0) and Paraguay (1-0). The Americans then defeated Ecuador (2-1) in the QF. After a disappointing start – the Americans are a confident bunch heading into this match.

Argentina went 3-0-0 during group play, defeating Chile (2-1), Panama (5-0) and Bolivia (3-0). It wasn’t a difficult group, but the Argentines still played great, especially once Lionel Messi started (He missed the opening match against Chile). Argentina are coming off a dominating QF win against Venezuela (4-1).

Team news

Already a big underdog, Team USA will also be without three starters due to suspension. Bobby Wood and Jermaine Jones are appealing their suspensions. The other suspended player is Alejandro Bedoya. There is some good news too – DeAndre Yedlin will be back in the line-up after serving his suspension.

Argentina don’t have any players suspended or injured and will likely roll out the same starting line-up as they did against Venezuela. With Messi, Gonzalo Higuaín and Nicolas Gaitan featuring in attacking roles, the Argentina squad have no shortage of goal scoring threats on the pitch.

Argentina vs. USA Copa America predictions

I’ll be cheering on the Americans, but from a strictly betting standpoint with no emotions involved, the best bet in this match is Argentina to cover the -1 handicap. For those that may have never bet on soccer, this bet wins if Argentina wins by two goals or pushes (tie) if they win by one goal.

Messi has been on fire at this year’s Copa America. He missed the match against Chile, but he has already scored four goals (Second in the tournament) and added two assists (Tied-second in the tournament). He’s likely going to draw a lot of defenders, but then Higuaín will have more space and he’s a great finisher.

Higuaín and Erik Lamela both have two goals in the competition for the Argentine squad. Argentina had a tough time with Chile without Messi, but they’ve dominated every opponent since. I’ve been impressed by the Americans defense, but they haven’t played anyone like Argentina yet.

Team USA will rely on Clint Dempsey like they have throughout Copa America. Dempsey has three goals (Tied-third in the tournament) and three assists (First in the tournament). Losing Wood is concerning, as he often drew defenders wide, which opened up the middle of the box for Dempsey.

We’ve yet to see the starting line-ups, but you can bet Graham Zusi will play. Darlington Nagbe will also likely feature in the starting XI on Tuesday night. Losing the continuity in the line-up is going to hurt the Americans upfront and unless Dempsey displays some magic, goals will be hard to come by.

I expect Jürgen Klinsmann to attack from the beginning of the match. The best chance the Americans have at upsetting the Argentines and advancing to the finals is by catching them off guard early. However, if the Argentines open the scoring, look for the floodgates to pour open like in Chile’s 7-0 win against Mexico.

The score won’t get that bad, but you can bet Messi and company won’t let up off of the gas if Team USA begins to falter under the pressure. I also feel like USA were content just getting to the semifinals, which isn’t the right attitude to have heading into this match against the best team in the tournament.

These teams don’t played each other, but Argentina have a 3-2-1 overall record against Team USA. The last two H2H matches have ended in draws, but those were friendlies. The last time they played each other at Copa America was in 2007 and Argentina won the match 4-1.
