2015 NBA Western Conference playoffs betting preview

2015 NBA Western Conference Playoffs Betting Preview

Start Date: Saturday, April 18th 2015.

JUST like in the East – the final playoff spot in the West was decided on Wednesday night.

The Oklahoma City Thunder won, but they also needed the New Orleans Pelicans to lose and that didn’t happen. The Pelicans have earned the 8th seed in the West – this is the first time the Pelicans have made the playoffs since drafting Anthony Davis.

There are a few great series in the West. The only series I expect to be a blowout is the Warriors vs. Pelicans. I believe the other three series could end up going either way and if you’re looking for an underdog to advance – you’ll want to look at the West.

The NBA Western Conference official seeds and first round match-ups are as followed:

Everyone who watches the NBA knows the West is extremely tough compared to the East. It took 45 wins to make the playoffs in the West compared to 38 wins in the East. Seven teams in the West have 50+ wins – only three teams in the East can say that.

The sportsbooks expect the top two seeds, Warriors and Spurs, to battle it out in the NBA Western Conference finals.

Golden State have the best record in the NBA (67-15), which includes only two home losses (39-2) and the best record against conference opponents (42-10) in the West. I expect the Warriors to win the NBA Finals and therefore the Western Conference.

The Houston Rockets (56-26) and Los Angeles Clippers (56-26) will be strong opposition though.

You can never rule out the Grizzlies, Mavericks or Trail Blazers either – all three teams have lots of playoff experience.

Below are previews for each of the four first round series, including the latest NBA playoff series odds.

Golden State Warriors vs. New Orleans Pelicans series odds and predictions

Game #1: Saturday, April 18th 2015 at 3:30pm ET on ESPN
Series Odds: Warriors -4000 vs. Pelicans +2000
Series Predictions: Golden State Warriors in 4 games.

The Pelicans (45-37) will have some confidence heading into this series, as they beat the Warriors earlier in the month. However, the Warriors are 3-1 in the H2H series against the Pelicans and two of the wins were absolute blowouts of 15+ points.

Stephen Curry (23.8 PPG and 7.7 APG) and Klay Thompson (21.7 PPG) will look to lead the way for Golden State. Draymond Green is going to be unleashed without a minutes restriction, plus this team is loaded with veteran role players that have playoff experience.

Anthony Davis (24.4 PPG, 10.2 RPG and 2.9 BPG) is a beast among men in the NBA. Jrue Holiday, Tyreke Evans and Eric Gordon are all good players, but the Pelicans (99.4 PPG – 16th) won’t be able to keep up on the scoreboard with the GSW (110.0 PPG – 1st).

Houston Rockets vs. Dallas Mavericks series odds and predictions

Game #1: Saturday, April 18th 2015 at 9:30pm ET on ESPN
Series Odds: Rockets -280 vs. Mavericks +240
Series Predictions: Dallas Mavericks in 7 games.

I’m betting on the Mavericks to win the series against the Rockets, which will be the biggest first round upset. The Mavericks (50-32) are a team that overachieves in the NBA playoffs. You can never rule them out – last year in round 1 they went 7 games against SAS.

Chandler Parsons is expected to be ready for game 1, so the Mavs are healthy. The Rockets just lost K.J. McDaniels for the playoffs, they’re already without Donatas Motiejunas, plus Patrick Beverley isn’t likely to suit up to begin the series on Saturday.

James Harden (27.4 PPG, 7.0 APG and 5.7 RPG) will be the best player on the court, but the Mavs have depth. Dwight Howard and Trevor Ariza are good players, but that’s not nearly enough depth.

Dirk Nowitzki (17.3 PPG), Monta Ellis (18.9 PPG), Parsons (15.7 PPG), Amar’e Stoudemire (10.8 PPG), Tyson Chandler (10.3 PPG) and Rajon Rondo (9.3 PPG) can all produce. I’ll take this type of depth over Harden and a beat up Rockets team every time.

Los Angeles Clippers vs. San Antonio Spurs series odds and predictions

Game #1: Sunday, April 19th 2015 at 10:30pm ET on TNT
Series Odds: Spurs -175 vs. Clippers +155
Series Predictions: Los Angeles Clippers in 6 games.

This is the year the San Antonio Spurs (55-27) will be knocked out of the playoffs early. The Spurs won the last playoff series three years ago against the Clippers, but the aging veterans won’t be able to keep up with the Clippers 2nd ranked offense (106.7 PPG).

Kawhi Leonard (16.5 PPG, 7.2 RPG and 2.3 SPG) will look to lead the Spurs to victory, but I’m not convinced Tony Parker, Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobli have enough left in the tank. Blake Griffin (21.9 PPG) and Chris Paul (19.1 PPG) will take over this series.

The Clippers have won seven games in a row and they’re the hottest team heading into the NBA playoffs. DeAndre Jordan averaged a double-double during the regular season (11.5 PPG and 15.0 RPG). I like Gregg Popovich, but even he can’t win this battle.

Portland Trail Blazers vs. Memphis Grizzlies series odds and predictions

Game #1: Sunday, April 19th 2015 at 8:00pm ET on TNT
Series Odds: Trail Blazers +165 vs. Memphis -190
Series Predictions: Memphis Grizzlies in 5 games.

Portland (51-31) have lost four games in a row and have very little confidence. A big issue has been injuries, as players like Nicolas Batum and Wesley Matthews are out. Several other players including Chris Kaman are listed as probable for game 1.

The Trail Blazers will go as far as Damian Lillard (21.0 PPG and 6.2 APG) and LaMarcus Aldridge (23.4 PPG and 10.2 RPG) take them.

Memphis (55-27) swept the season series (4-0) against Portland and I expect them to dominate the playoff series too. The Grizzlies rank 2nd in points allowed (95.1 PPG), thanks to Marc Gasol (17.4 PPG) and Zach Randolph (16.1 PPG) dominating the paint.
