2014 World Cup Group G Odds: Team USA Betting

We’re nearing in on just two weeks before the start of the 2014 World Cup and most countries have released their final rosters. In this article we’re going to take an in-depth look at Group G of the 2014 World Cup, which is the group that Team USA is in.

Odds to Win Group G at the 2014 World Cup

The Germans are deserving favorites in this group and they should be able to secure all nine points during group stage. I think that even at –200 odds the Germans are worth a bet to win Group G, however, we’ll also take a look at some other interesting bets.

World Cup Group G Schedule

WC Group G Team Capsules

Germany will be tough to score on with the likes of Phillip Lahm and Mats Hummels manning the back line. Manuel Neuer is one of the top goalkeepers in the world. The question for the Germans will be whether or not the attacking front will play well together.

There is a lot of world-class talent upfront with Thomas Muller, Mesut Ozil, Marco Reus, Mario Gotze and Miroslav Klose, but it may take a match or two to determine what’s working. With all of the talent on this squad they’ll have no problem advancing.

Based on the odds Portugal looks like a shoe-in to advance to the knockout stage of the World Cup, but not so fast. This team will be relying heavily on Cristiano Ronaldo. They nearly missed qualifying for the WC, but Ronaldo put the team on his back and qualified.

Defensively the Portuguese are sound with veterans like Pepe and Alves playing CB. The problem has always been the lack of scoring other than Ronaldo. If he isn’t scoring Portugal usually struggles. Where Portugal excels and can hurt teams is on the counterattack.

Talk about the group of death for the Americans who couldn’t catch a break. The hype machine has been running for a while, but the US and Jurgen Klinsmann will find it very tough to advance, especially after Klinsmann decided to omit Landon Donovan.

To qualify the USA weren’t that tested, as Costa Rica is the only other strong side in CONCACAF. They have a lot of young talent that have been in good form this year. This team wants to improve upon their QF exit from 2010 where they won their group.

Judging by the FIFA rank you’d think that Ghana would stand no chance in this group, but that’s not the case. They’ve eliminated the US from the last two World Cups. This team has some big names including the likes of Michael Essien and Kevin Prince-Boateng.

Ghana ran through their WC qualification without any problems at all. They’ll play confidently against Team USA due to their recent success over them, but I think the talent in this group will overwhelm Ghana and they’ll end up finishing in last place.

Will Team USA Advance to the Knockout Stage

Like I said above, I expect the Germans to win Group G without much of a problem. They’re just too good and it would take them to play horribly for them not to win the group. The second team to qualify from this group is wide open and could really be any team.

The entire World Cup for the Americans will come down to their first game against Ghana. They need to be able to defeat Ghana in my opinion in order to advance. Team USA has had a troubled past in the World Cup against Ghana, but the past is the past.

Klinsmann has the US team playing confidently and they know everything is riding on the Ghana match. If they win that match and choke it wouldn’t be that big of a disappointment based on the group they drew, but losing to Ghana would be a disappointment.

If they beat Ghana and draw Portugal they’ll be sitting in a decent position. They get Portugal after the Portuguese have a tough match against the Germans, which is a plus. I expect the betting public to sleep on the US team and at 3/1 to advance I like it a lot.

Top Group Goalscorer

Cristiano Ronaldo is the obvious choice to be the top goalscorer in the group, but I expect every team to double or even triple team him in the attacking half of the field simply because the rest of the Portuguese attack isn’t overly threatening.

I’m worried that Miroslav Klose will be fighting for playing time, which is why I’d wait to bet on this. If it looks like Klose will play a big role for the Germans I’ll be betting on him. Klose has had tons of success scoring in prior World Cups and this is his last one.
