2014 NFL Super Bowl Prop Betting Guide

Everyone likes betting on prop markets during the Super Bowl and Bovada has gone all out this year. There are hundreds of prop markets available to bet on at the Bovada Sportsbook this week including team props, player props and novelty props.

Who Will Win the Super Bowl MVP Award?

Bovada has odds on over 20+ players plus a field option in the 2014 NFL Super Bowl MVP prop market. Historically the QB’s have had the edge in this market. A QB has won the Super Bowl MVP award in eleven of the last fifteen years including the last four years.

Peyton Manning (+110) is favored to win the award, but I’m avoiding him because I expect the Seahawks to win the game. The next two options are Russell Wilson (+375) and Marshawn Lynch (+375). Lynch is a strong contender, but RB’s don’t win the MVP often.

The last RB to win the Super Bowl MVP was Terrell Davis (1999). Since 2005 three WR’s have won the award and I think that’s where we’ll find the best value. Percy Harvin (+1800), Golden Tate (+2800) and Doug Baldwin (+4000) are all options on the Seahawks.

My money is on Golden Tate at 28/1 odds. He has been held quiet during the playoffs, but he has the big play potential and I expect his speed to cause the Broncos secondary problems. Tate will receive 1-on-1 coverage and he’ll also be returning punts.

Seattle Seahawks Player Props

Bet on Seahawks team/player prop bets at the Bovada Sportsbook.

Russell Wilson is only 25/43 for 318 passing yards and 1 TD during the playoffs through two games, but in both of those games he was up against tough pass defenses. Denver is better at stopping the run, so Wilson is going to have to step up this week.

Denver has allowed 450 passing yards in the playoffs and the secondary is weak for the most part. They have to sell out in order to stop the run and Wilson should find plenty of time to look for receivers downfield. At just 209.5 passing yards I’m betting the over.

The odds aren’t too juicy, but this is a great banker prop to use on your parlays. Seattle has scored 4 offensive TD’s in the playoffs and Lynch has had three of them on the ground. Once in the red zone Lynch will get the football and he won’t be denied a TD.

Golden Tate has been held to 5 receptions for 44 yards in two playoff games, but he’ll break out in the Super Bowl. The Broncos will have to worry about Harvin and Tate will be able to exploit 1-on-1 coverage. I expect Tate to be over this total after the 1H.

Denver Broncos Player Props

Bet on Broncos team/player props at the Bovada Sportsbook.

This prop is based on Manning’s 1st completion only and I think it has value based on what we’ve seen from Manning. He has been throwing the football short and quick the majority of the time and Seattle is great at wrapping up receivers after the catch.

Knowshon Moreno has 1 rushing TD in the playoffs, but he has been much more active than Montee Ball in the Broncos offense. He is a threat to score in the run game or pass game and at even money I think betting on Moreno to score a TD is great value.

Seattle will have their hands full trying to cover the three stud WR’s on Denver (Thomas, Welker & Decker). Julius Thomas will have lots of opportunities to beat his coverage. He already has 14 receptions for 161 yards in two games and he’ll play a big role in the SB.

2014 NFL Super Bowl Novelty Prop Bets

Bet on novelty prop bets at the Bovada Sportsbook.

I expect the commentators to reference the “12th Man” over 2 times during the game. There will be a lot of Seattle fans at the game and this prop bet sticks out to me as being great value. All the rage has been the 12th man in Seattle and it’ll be talked about in NJ.

Last year Obama said he couldn’t decide on who would win and that he wouldn’t make predictions unless Chicago was playing. This year I expect him to make a pick and take Seattle. There is no reason to back up this bet and it’s just my personal opinion.

At plus money this prop stood out to me also. The Montreal Canadiens and Winnipeg Jets play on Sunday as well in the NHL and this is a cross-market prop. Moreno may have 2-3 receptions and I expect the MON vs. WIN game to have a minimum of 5-6 goals.
