2014 Big Ten Championship Betting – Badgers vs. Buckeyes

#11 Wisconsin Badgers vs. #6 Ohio State Buckeyes Preview

Start Time: Sunday, December 6th 2014 at 8:15pm ET
Location: Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana
Station: FOX

The Ohio State Buckeyes 11-1 (8-0 Big Ten) suffered a huge blow last week, as QB J.T. Barrett went down with an injury. That means we’re going to see Cardale Jones starting at QB in the Big Ten Championship Game against the Wisconsin Badgers 10-2 (7-1 Big Ten).

With Barrett out the Badgers have opened up as the favorite and they’re getting more action at the betting window. I’m a little bit surprised by this, but it just means I like OSU even more. The total doesn’t interest me in this game, as it really could go either way.

WIS vs. OSU Offensive Comparison

Both teams can put up points in a hurry and can run the football extremely well. The Buckeyes have had a better passing offense all season, but it’s hard to know if OSU will air it out much. Jones is a capable pocket passer, so I expect Urban Meyer to let him loose.

In limited action this season Jones has gone 10 of 17 for 118 yards and 2 TD’s. He isn’t much of a threat in the run game because he lacks speed, but he had a nice run against Michigan last week. Jones does have capable WR’s, so I expect the OSU offense to be fine.

Melvin Gordon is the lone pulse on the Badgers offense and they’ll be game planning around him. Gordon averages 8.0 YPC on the ground and he has 2260 rushing yards plus 26 TD’s. He has more TD’s this season than the entire team, which is incredible.

Wisconsin has had no luck with their QB’s this season and I’m surprised it hasn’t cost them bigger yet. Gordon can only do so much on the ground and you need an effective pass game to keep the defense honest and to open up the field a bit more for the RB’s.

WIS vs. OSU Defensive Comparison

Both of these defenses are excellent and points should be at a premium in this one. Wisconsin definitely has the better defense, as they rank in the top ten in almost every statistical category. The biggest defensive battle will be between the two run stopping units.

Ohio State has had some trouble against the run this season, but Meyer will ensure he stacks the box in this match-up, as Wisconsin really has a poor passing offense. Meyer’s only concern should be ensuring that his defense keeps Gordon under 200 rushing yards.

I don’t expect many turnovers in this game, as every point and possession will be at a premium. These two teams don’t turn it over that often to begin with. At the end of the day, Wisconsin has the better defense, but the difference between the two isn’t that bad.

Wisconsin Badgers vs. Ohio State Buckeyes Predictions

I love Ohio State in this one for multiple reasons. Meyer is the better coach and will have a game plan to beat Wisconsin. OSU also has an incredible H2H record against Wisconsin. The Buckeyes are 6-1 (5-1-1 ATS) in the last seven games against the Badgers.

Wisconsin last beat the Buckeyes back in 2010 and that trend is unlikely to change. Wisconsin has also struggled when playing on a neutral field, as they’re 1-5 ATS in the last five games that they’ve played on a neutral field, which isn’t a good sign for them.

If Gordon can find running room all game and put up close to his season average than the Badgers will likely win and may cover, but I’m expecting the Buckeyes to keep Gordon in check. I believe that neither team will score near their season average in this one.
