2013 March Madness Futures Predictions

The 2013 March Madness tournament starts tonight with the first two play-in games, but the actual madness doesn’t get started until this Thursday with the first full slate of 2nd round match-ups. In this article I’m going to break down some of my favorite 2013 March Madness futures predictions.

My Favorite Picks to Win the NCAA Championship

Louisville is now favored to win the big dance and for good reason. The Cardinals had an RPI rank of #3 and SOS rank of #6. They get it done on defense (58 PPG – 15th) first, but they also average 73.6 PPG (42nd), 15 APG (33rd) and 37.5 RPG (49th).

Russ Smith leads the Cardinals with 18.1 PPG, but big man Gorgui Dieng will need to be on his game. Dieng averages 10 PPG, but he also leads the team with 9.9 RPG and is a match-up nightmare in the paint for most teams in the tournament.

Louisville ended up in the Midwest Region, which isn’t that tough. #2 Duke will be the Cardinals toughest competition and I also think Louisville will have a tough game in the S16 against the Billikens, but I like their chances to make the Final Four.

Ohio State is a #2 seed in the West Region, but I think they have one of the best draws in the tournament. The Buckeyes should be able to advance to the E8 without much of a problem and they’ll likely play #1 Gonzaga or possibly even #5 Wisconsin.

OSU just beat Wisconsin in the Big Ten Championship (50-43) and would most likely beat them again. If OSU ends up playing the Zags I would favour the Buckeyes, as Gonzaga had a very weak SOS (#74) compared to OSU who had a SOS rank of #11.

Aaron Craft averages 9.9 PPG and 4.6 APG while superstar Deshaun Thomas averages 19.5 PPG and 6.2 RPG. The Buckeyes are a tough defensive team (57.9 PPG – 14th) and they’ve been on an amazing 8-0 run including 4 wins against T25 opponents.

Potential Sleeper That Could Win the Championship

This is a longshot, but the #5 UNLV Rebels at 66/1 look like a nice bet that can be hedged down the road. If the Rebels can knock-off Cal in the 2nd round they would most likely play Syracuse, which I feel is a winnable game for the Rebels.

After the Cuse game the Rebels would most likely play the #1 Hoosiers, which would be a tough game to win. You could hedge the bet at this stage and guarantee that you don’t lose or you could let it ride and hedge if they beat Indiana.

UNLV had an RPI rank of #23 and a SOS rank of #17. The Rebels have some questionable losses due to their defense, but they’ve also won some big games against T25 competition. UNLV averages 71.7 PPG (72nd), 40.1 RPG (6th) and 16.2 APG (9th).

Team That Will Make the 2013 March Madness Sweet Sixteen

You have to win two games to make the S16 during March Madness, so there isn’t going to be much value betting on a favorite at short odds. However, some of the middle of the pack teams like the Billikens are paying close to even money to make the S16.

Saint Louis put up great numbers this season in the A-10 and they’ve only lost 1 of their L16 games. They just knocked off VCU in the A-10 Conference Championship and come into the tournament as a #4 seed in the Midwest Region.

The Billikens open up against #13 New Mexico State, which they should win. They’ll then have a tough game against Oregon or Oklahoma State with a S16 berth on the line. Saint Louis is underrated and one of the hottest teams heading into the tourney.

How Many #1 Seeds Will Make the 2013 March Madness Final Four

It’s always nice to have underdogs make a run during March Madness, but I don’t see it happening this year. I expect Louisville to make it to the Final Four out of the Midwest Region and I could also see #1 Indiana and #1 Kansas advancing.

Kansas will have some troubles with both Georgetown and Florida in the South Region, but they’re very talented and can beat any team in the tournament if they play 100%. Indiana I think has a great chance to advance as well in the East Region.
