2012 ICC World Cup Twenty20 Tournament Format & Schedule

There are twelve teams in the tournament including the ten test cricket teams and two qualifiers. The two countries that qualified for this year’s tournament are Afghanistan and Ireland. The twelve teams have been split up into 4 groups and the top two teams in each group after the preliminary round will qualify for the “Super Eight” round.

Three teams are in each group and each team plays each other once in the preliminary round. During the Super Eight stage the teams left in the tournament are split into two groups of 4 and each team plays against each other once. The top two teams in each of the Super Eight groups qualify for the semi-finals and the winner of the semi-finals play in the 2012 ICC World T20 Finals.

Preliminary Round Schedule: Runs from 18 September – 25 September 2012

Super Eight Stage Schedule: Runs from 27 September – 2 October 2012

Semi-Finals Schedule: 4 October (19:30) & 5 October (19:30)

Can Sri Lanka Win the 2012 ICC World T20 Championship?

Sri Lanka is going to prove tough to beat on home soil in the 2012 ICC World T20 tournament. They always play well in this event, which includes a 3rd place finish in 2010 and a 2nd place finish in 2009. Sri Lanka finished 2nd in the 2011 Cricket World Cup as well recently, so the team should be brimming with confidence heading into the tournament.

England are the defending champions, as they won the 2010 ICC World T20 tournament. The team has had in-house issues leading up to the tournament in Sri Lanka and Kevin Pietersen has been left off the squad. Not having Pietersen’s bat is going to hurt the English side and I expect them to be knocked out early on after being upset.

South Africa is heating up at the right time, as they’re now the #1 ranked team on the ICC Twenty20 rankings. South Africa hasn’t had success in this prestigious tournament in the past, as their best finish was the semi-finals. South Africa is in Group C with the Sri Lankan team and Zimbabwe, so they’ll need to make sure they beat Zimbabwe to qualify for the Super Eight round.

India is the favourite to win the 2012 ICC World T20 tournament. Suresh Raina, Yuvraj Singh and captain Mahendra Dhoni will be looking to ensure they get their squad into the Super Eight stage. India is in Group A with England and Afghanistan. The recent form of Afghanistan has been good, so India needs to be weary in the prelim round.

Bangladesh is a squad I think has some value at 50/1, as you can hedge the bet if they make the Super Eight stage. They need to win against Pakistan or New Zealand in Group D to have a chance at qualifying into the Super Eight round. I don’t think this team will beat Pakistan, but there is a chance they could upset New Zealand in the prelims.

2012 ICC T20 Outright Winner Betting Tips

I’m betting on Sri Lanka in the outright winner market at the 2012 ICC World Cup T20 tournament. I’ll also be looking for value in the in-play markets, as they have extremely high liquidity during big international cricket events like this. Laying odds-on favourites pre-match is often a good betting strategy to catch early swings in matches, especially when the favourite doesn’t bat first.

2012 T20 World Cup In-Play Wagering & Mobile Bookies

Look for a ton of in-play betting action at Bet365, Ladbrokes and PaddyPower this year. All of these mobile bookies have expanded their in-play betting options and will have hundreds, if not thousands of in-play wagers available. If you aren’t familiar with in-play, these are wagers that can be placed while a match is happening. Dozens, and some times hundreds of bets can be placed during a single match, making the betting action fast & furious. Also, most in-play bets have minimum wager amounts of just £1 – £2.
