2012-2013 NFC Conference Picks

The NFC is home to the defending Super Bowl champions, the New York Giants, as well as perennial favorites like the Green Bay Packers. But as Aaron Rodgers and the Pack found out last season, there are no sure bets in the NFL.

2012 – 2013 NFC Championship Prediction: Green Bay Packers

Online sportsbooks are setting payouts on the Green Bay Packers (15-1, 11-5 ATS) at 7/2 and that sounds about right for a team that’s all but guaranteed to make a serious run. Aaron Rodgers (343-502 4, 643 yards, 45 TD’s, 6 INT) has everything he needs on his side of the ball.

The big x-factor is that impressive, but somehow very porous, Green Bay defense. Last season they gave up 30 or more points in four games, including that 37-20 playoff loss to the New York Giants (9-7, 8-7-1).

Still, with threats from the Saints and Giants diminished (more on that in a moment) the Pack has a good shot at becoming the 2012 NFC Conference champions.

NFC North Futures: Green Bay Packers Lead the Way

Keeping opponents under 30 points a game will be a big help for Green Bay (-250) and will let Rodgers work his magic. They’ve got a couple late season road challenges in Chicago and New York, but otherwise it should be smooth sailing.

Green Bay’s biggest threat in the North comes from Jay Cutler (182-314, 2,319 yds, 13 TDs, 7 INT) and the Chicago Bears (8-8, 7-8-1, +350). They’ve revamped their receiving corps with the help of Brandon Marshall and seem willing to give Cutler what he says he needs.

The Detroit Lions (10-6, 5-10-1) are a dark horse contender, but were clearly over-valued by the betting public last year.

NFC East Futures: Don’t Include New York Giants

Eli Manning (359-589, 4,933 yds, 29 TDs, 16 INT) led the Giants (9-7, 8-7-1, +200) all the way, but he’s not quite in dynasty mode…yet. With serious threats from Dallas (8-8, 5-10-1, +250) and Philadelphia (8-8, 8-8, +150) this is a tough conference by anyone’s standards.

Last season the Dallas Cowboys shot themselves in the foot a few times, but they won’t likely make those kinds of mistakes again this year. Watch for Tony Romo (346-522, 4,184 yds, 31 TDs, 10 INT) to step up his game and deliver some postseason play to the Lone Star State.

NFC West Futures: San Francisco 49ers Set to Dominate

The San Francisco 49ers (13-3, 11-4-1, -225) head coach Jim Harbaugh had an impressive debut season and is set for a repeat in 2012. They’ve got a tough home opener against the Packers, but won’t be seriously challenged on the road until November 25th when they face the New Orleans Saints (13-3, 12-4 ATS). Defensively, the Niners have the weapons to keep them in the hunt when games are close. That’s also a major advantage when taking on those razor-thin NFL spreads.

NFL bettors should set their Android sports betting apps to keep an eye on the Seahawks (7-9, 10-5-1, +500), too. They should be improved over last year, but will likely be overlooked by the betting public in the early part of the season.

NFC South Futures: Atlanta Falcons Looking Strong

The biggest question in the NFC South is how badly damaged will the Saints (13-3, 12-4, +130) be hurt by the off-season bounty scandals? Drew Brees (468-589, 5,476 yds, 46 TDs, 16 INT) is poised for another monster season but his defense might not be up to the task.

We’re looking at Matt Ryan (347-566, 4,177 yds, 29 TDs, 12 INT) and the Atlanta Falcons (10-6, 7-7-2, +140) to come out on top. They’ve got a very friendly road schedule and catch a bye week ahead of their toughest road challenges in Philadelphia and New Orleans. It’s going to be a challenge, but with a hobbled New Orleans Saints, this could be Atlanta’s year.
